Herbalife has expanded its "Fuel Like Ronaldo" campaign with a 3.5-hour pre-match nutrition framework that outlines meal timing, hydration, and carbohydrate recommendations designed to help athletes prepare for competition.

LOS ANGELES, June 29, 2026 (WELLNESS INTERVIEWS)Herbalife has expanded its global "Fuel Like Ronaldo" campaign by introducing a structured 3.5-hour pre-match fueling framework that provides nutrition recommendations for athletes preparing for competition.

According to the company, the framework is designed to help athletes optimize energy stores, maintain hydration, and support performance throughout a match. The recommendations include consuming a balanced meal approximately three and a half hours before kickoff consisting primarily of carbohydrates, along with fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and fluids.

The company also recommends consuming 30 to 60 grams of easily digestible carbohydrates and additional fluids 30 to 60 minutes before competition to help maintain energy levels at the start of play. Herbalife advises athletes to avoid unfamiliar foods and foods high in fat or fiber immediately before competition.

The guidance also notes that extensive carbohydrate loading the night before a standard 90-minute soccer match is generally unnecessary, emphasizing that consistent daily nutrition and a structured match-day routine play a greater role in athletic performance.

"The 3.5 hours before kickoff are when an athlete decides what kind of second half they are going to have. Get the timing and composition right and the body has the carbohydrate, fluid and sodium it needs to compete from minute one," said Dr. Krissy Ladner, Director of Sports Performance and Nutrition Education at Herbalife.

The company says that the fueling framework can be adapted for athletes at various levels, including recreational athletes, runners, cyclists, and other competitors by adjusting portion sizes based on individual body size and activity level.
